NTesports and ZMS Studios Showcase Student-Led Innovation at Phynai Phrenzy

The recent Phynai Phrenzy event at Queen Mary’s College (QMC) in Basingstoke was a shining example of what happens when passion meets opportunity, and it marked another milestone in the successful partnership between NTesports and ZMS Esports Studios.

Organised and delivered entirely by students from QMC, with support from ZMS Studios on production, the event demonstrated how a professional-level broadcast setup can be achieved on a grassroots budget. From start to finish, the students led the charge in running a competitive esports event, proving just how far enthusiasm, guidance, and the right tools can go.

NTesports Managing Director, Nik Turner, was on site to support the event and present prizes, made possible thanks to contributions from NTesports, Corsair and MSI. The atmosphere was electric, and the level of production quality was a testament to the students’ hard work and ZMS Studios’ mentorship.
Cost-Effective, High-Impact Production
Working together, QMC students and ZMS Studios executed a remarkable broadcast solution that included:
  • A full 10-player live camera setup
  • Integrated gameplay and venue footage
  • Custom-branded graphics, results, and animated stingers
  • Team walkout visuals with music
  • All players and gameplay available for live and slow-motion replay
All of this was achieved without the need for a costly multi-person production crew or expensive equipment. Instead, cameras were networked using WiFi and NDI to overcome cabling limitations, with the entire production managed solo through a vMix software setup. It was proof that innovation and teamwork can deliver professional results without professional-level budgets.
Empowering the Next Generation
Phynai Phrenzy wasn’t just a one-off success; it inspired a wave of interest in esports production among the students involved. Many are now keen to learn more about the technical side of live esports broadcasting, and NTesports, in collaboration with ZMS Studios, is committed to helping them develop these new skills.
“We’re not looking to compete with the big guys,” said Damon Bates, owner of ZMS Esports Studios. “We’re here to empower grassroots and educational organisations to do bigger things within their budget. The Phynai Phrenzy is proof of what students are capable of when given the tools to showcase their hard work.”

This ethos aligns perfectly with NTesports’ mission: to open up access, opportunity, and inspiration in the world of esports education.
A Collective Effort
NTesports extends its thanks to Stuart Folkes of QMC for granting the freedom to pursue this project and for supporting a student-led approach. Our thanks also go to ZMS Studios for delivering a smooth, engaging, and educational broadcast experience that didn’t just entertain, it educated.
We encourage other institutions to take inspiration from Phynai Phrenzy. With the right support and a little creativity, grassroots esports events can reach new heights and help students learn skills that will serve them far beyond the gaming world.
