HSDC Students Host Festive Gaming Event to Support ‘Safe in Our World’

HSDC students at the Alton Campus are coming together this holiday season to raise funds for the mental health charity Safe in Our World. The charity, established in 2019, is dedicated to fostering positive mental health and wellbeing across the video games industry.

From players to developers, publishers, and retailers, Safe in Our World provides vital support and resources to anyone in need. Its mission is clear: to start conversations, drive cultural change, and ensure that no one in the gaming community feels alone when dealing with mental health struggles.

To support this meaningful cause, first-year esports UAL students at HSDC’s Alton campus have organised a special in-person Christmas event. Held in the state-of-the-art esports suite, the event promises fun, games, and a little friendly competition, all while raising as much money as possible for Safe in Our World. Students, staff, and visitors are invited to take part in:

  • Esports Competitions: Show off your skills in thrilling 1v1 matchups and other esports-themed challenges.
  • Quiz Time Trials: Put your gaming knowledge to the test in a fast-paced, games-themed quiz
  • Prizes Galore: Participants will have the chance to win fantastic prizes, including a merchandise bundle generously donated by NTesports and a Harpoon RGB Mouse and MM100 mouse mat courtesy of Adam Phillips at Corsair.

The event is being supported by Nik Turner, founder of NTesports, who continues to champion grassroots esports and student initiatives. NTesports’ involvement further demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting young esports talent and promoting important causes like mental health awareness.

Lizzie Squires, co-owner of Vulpine Esports and the esports teacher of the students has organised the event and students have also benefited from expert mentorship provided by co-owner Luke Squires. Both Lizzie and Luke have been guiding the students through the process of running live events. This invaluable experience is part of their preparation for a much larger event, a key component of their second-year curriculum.

For those unable to attend in person, donations are still very welcome and can be made via the event’s GoFundMe page: WinterFest Games Fundraiser.

This exciting event is more than just a festive gathering. It’s a celebration of community, collaboration, and the positive impact that gaming can have when harnessed for a good cause. Whether you’re a competitor, quiz enthusiast, or simply there to support, every donation and every effort brings us closer to helping Safe in Our World continue their vital work.
